Specialized Instruction: Our Theme for 2015-2016

Each school year, the T/TAC at Virginia Tech chooses a theme to guide our work. Last year we focused on co-teaching, and we observed co-teaching teams making great strides in their practices and outcomes. Logically, the next step is to enhance the use of specialized instruction in the co-taught classroom or resource room to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

Many of you attended our professional learning days focused on scheduling, co-teaching, and data analysis. You participated in rich discussions around specialized instruction, interventions, remediation, and the multi-tiered system of supports. Our goal this year is to expand on those conversations by assisting educators in implementing targeted, specialized instruction and interventions which will result in successful outcomes for students with disabilities.

Toward that goal we have planned several professional learning days throughout the fall with the focus of specialized instruction. The professional learning opportunities will target early childhood, low-incidence populations, and the K–12 general education curriculum. We will use these opportunities to springboard our follow-up activities throughout the year.

Needless to say, we are excited to begin a new year and as always, look forward to our work together!
