ICDL'S 13th Annual Conference, Autism Spectrum Disorders: What Works and Why?
Description: New hours for the conference, Friday Nov. 6 begins at 1:00 PM and concludes 12 Noon on Sunday, Nov. 8. Reading Open House
Description: Pre-K - Grade 12 literacy resources, center suggestions, parent information and resources supporting the 5 domains of reading comprehension.
Two make and take sessions focusing on adolescent literacy will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Reserve a spot by emailing tcraft1@vt.edu. Seats are limited for both sessions.
The Open House Event is free and open to all educators and families.

Video Modeling/Video Self-Modeling: Research to Practice
Description: Video Modeling/Video Self-Modeling is an evidence-based approach that allows
individuals to view peers or themselves on video engaging in behaviors
targeted for intervention such as communication, social, daily living
skills, and more. In this two-part training, participants will first learn
of the research that validates this as an evidence-based approach for
supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The second part of
the training will be hands-on and participants will learn how to take video,
edit, and use the video with the student to improve skills and behaviors.
It is expected that participants will use this approach with a student in
the following three months. Follow-up assistance will be available. Each
participant will receive a copy of the recently released book by Dr. Tom
Buggey, Seeing is Believing: Video Self-Modeling for People with Autism and
Other Developmental Disabilities.
Research related to the effectiveness of this training will be conducted. Participants will have the opportunity to choose to participate in this study.
School teams of up to 3 participants are encourage to attend. Priority will be given to participants from Superintendents Regions 6 & 7. Space is limited to 30 participants. There is no registration fee for this workshop; however, registration is required. Substitutions are permitted. Lunch and continental breakfast will be provided.

Description: Students face "on demand" writing tasks across the curriculum. Learn instructional strategies to strengthen students' writing. Adaptations for each strategy will be presented. Participants will leave with instructional strategies they can implement immediately to assist students' preparation for the SOL Writing Performance test. The target audience is for 4th – 11th grade teachers, special educators, literacy specialists.

Increasing Learner Outcomes: Planning for Success through Access and
Implementation
Description: Who will benefit from this training: Educators, Teacher Leaders, Occupational
Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Assistive
Technology staff/team members, parents.
This hands-on workshop will provide participants with knowledge in how to apply technology to meet the learning needs of all students within the classroom. Utilizing the ESS+ lesson plans and the Framework for Consideration of Assistive Technology (AT), participants will build skills in implementing appropriate tools to address the principles of Universal Design for Learning as well as address how to make decisions on AT needed for students with disabilities. Participants will leave with tools and resources to help them incorporate technologies and AT into the curriculum. This training will address AT to benefit students with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and other areas of disability.

Interactive Whiteboard
Description: The focus of this training is to take a look at how the interactive whiteboard can be used as an assistive technology device and used to incorporate the principles of Universal Design for Learning into classroom instruction for all students. The SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard will be demonstrated in this session. Participants should have some experience and knowledge of the basic use of this technology.

Interactive Learning through Technology
Description: This hands-on training will provide participants with a toolbox of interactive activities, materials, shortcuts and tools to promote active and successful participation of all students including students with disabilities within the general curriculum. This session will focus on commonly available applications and free tools readily available within most schools – Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel, Kidspiration, and more. Participants will leave with activities they have created that can be implemented the next day as well as a CD full of materials for future lessons.
